Hi guys, i recenrlt brought a second hand 406 estate on an 02 plate, 2.0 Hdi.
got it home fine, noticed that the cigrette lighter wasnt working and changed
the fuse (didnt fix it) but in error i took out the SH (shunt) fuse, and the
stereo lost its settings, again no prob quick set up and sorted, but now it
wont start, it turns over but wont fire !!! aaarrgggh i left it for 20min
central locking works fine, but it wont start and on the display it says
economy mode active... what does this mean? now the stereo wont work i get
    nothing... any ideas chaps?

    many thanks

Hmmmm weird, Sounds like it got confused when you took the shunt fuse
out. Try this. Open the driver's window and the bonnet and take the
key out of the ignition. Get out of the car and close and lock the
door. Leave it alone for 5 minutes (sleep mode). Now disconnect the
battery, both leads and hold the leads together for a further 5
minutes. Reconnect the battery and lean into the open window and
switch the lights on. This wakes the BSI up gently! Now open the door
on the plip and try to start it.
Economy mode will go if and when it starts.
If that doesn't work suspect the key has lost its settings and you
will need to take it to a Pug garage to recode the key. Have you got a
spare key? Does it work? You will need the code card that should have
come with the car when you bought it.

  3. In addition to what Nigel said (and he does generally know what he is
talking about!), Economy Mode is what the car goes into if you have sat
in it for a while with the engine turned off (e.g. sitting waiting in a
car park with the radio on). It basically shuts down some of the
electrical systems to stop the battery draining, as it assumes you've
done this accidentally. Starting the car will clear economy mode,
economy mode doesn't stop the car running. As Nigel suggests, rebooting
the car may clear your problem (don't you just love modern cars?).

electrics now work, i have an half open window, no stereo, etc.. i can lock
with ot with remote, but cant start it to remove the econ mode...again..

  6. Hi Nige,

    did that... but
it looks like there was a fuel problem... the car would turn but not start,
so a local garage, popped over, played around with somthing to do with the
fuel system advises that i must have has a bit of dirt get into somthing,
bleed it and it started and then the econ mode was reset, all back and
working!!! inc the elcetrics after it was started. at least i now what this
    is now.

    all sorted now.

thanks to matt & nige for there advise, big thumbs up!. cheers guys.

economy mode means the car has switched the radio off to save the battery.
