Does anyone know exactly what it means when the stop warning light flashes
on the dash? I stopped the car and checked everything i could think of but
nothing was wrong, I thought it might be low on oil but plenty in there.
Will have to take it to local garage for a check but was wondering if anyone
here had this problem come up before.

My understanding from the car's manual is that the STOP light comes on
along with one of the other red warning lights on the dash - for
example the Oil, Battery or Brake warning lights to indicate a serious
    problem.

Never heard of it flashing. Could it be a faulty bulb or connection
    behind the panel?

    Hello,
What are the other alerts lights saying ? i.e, is another alert light on
(oil pressure, water temp, ...) ? Are all doors closed (even if I guess this
feature isn't fit on your car) ?

flash. I could find nothing wrong with the car myself, i went for a test
drive and everything seems fine now with no flashing light.
It may only have been a loose connection as someone said but i will have it
checked when i get it serviced this week.

I had that problem with my 306 Lx D except that mine did not
flash. As others have said it is serious WHEN it come on
with another indication (water temp or oil pressure) in my
case there were no other problems. It turned out to a
corroded connector on the water temp sensor. There are
two wires to the sensor one is for the temp sensor and the
other one is an over temp sw. to earth which will bring on
the STOP light, this was corroded and was some how going to
earth and intermittenly putting the light on. The pin and
the connector corroded so bad that the only cure would be a
new sensor and connector. A new sensor is not a problem but
the connector (blue) is only available in the form a new
wiring harness at some horrendous price, needless to say it
has not been replaced, a visit to the scap yard for a
connector will suffice when convenient. The water temp gauge
has been working Ok for last few months and the STOP light
has not come on when it shouldn't.
