Peugeot Partner 2.0 Power steering issues

    Hi,
    All of a sudden, my power steering faded and stopped working on my 2006 2.0 Hdi Partner van.
    I had to reverse up a long gravel driveway which was pretty hard work, bumpy and rutted, failed at the top with a light squeak.
    May have ground out on something in the process...
    I'm in New Zealand so parts are very very scarce, and expensive!
    What could cause it to fail so suddenly, I read there was a valve possibly, but wondering if it was something other than the pump?
    How can I test it
    Will a pump from another Peugeot diesel fit, I can only find a 306 diesel (no idea if turbo, or year etc).
    Desperately trying to fix this, any help appreciated!
