This is possibly about the age where it could be either or even BOTH!

How does that work? The speedo is driven by a cable and an electronic sensor
for the ECU. This is how my Jan 95 pug does it.

Look at the differential housing just above where the righthand driveshaft
    comes out.
    There will be either
1)just a sensor with a 3 pin connector on the side
    2) Just a mechanical cable coming out the top
    or
3)A sensor with 3 pin connector with a mechanical cable coming out the top.

Often the fault is a stripped gear on the bottom of this sensor/cable.
less than a fiver from pug and dead easy to change. One 10 or 11 mm a/f bolt
    and it lifts out.
Just make sure you jack the car up and properly secure it with the right
hand side tipped up. This drains the gear oil away from the side you are
working on and so you should not lose any oil.

    Good luck
    Bob

    Hi,
    top.
True, but it seems it's electronic speedo only on Mk2 106s, according to the
    spare parts CD.

I agree. I think you'll find it has a cable only. Though as a previous
poster said, it may be the driven gear where the cable fits into the
gear box. And if you're really unlucky, and it has happened to me at
work, it could even be the driving gear in the extension housing,
where the driveshaft fits into the box. Not too bad a job, but it
requires the driveshaft to be taken out.
