My Sister Just bought 405 turbo D 110k,Nice looking,6 yrs service
records Just had new glowplugs and battery.Seems great!
But doesn’t start happily at all in the morning, turns over fine, pre
heater light comes on,for about 7 seconds and relay clicks.
Takes 3 to 6 times turning over, then it splutters (a little) and
belches out a cloud of whiteish grayish smoke. Before running fine

Help anyone out there.Could this be solenoid problems or maybe
injectors,i noticed they had not been changed in the 6 years
records. Also the previous owner only ran the car 5 or 10 mile a day
    on average

White smoke is unburnt fuel. So we can assume that the stop (fuel) solenoid
    is OK.

There is a thread on this above which would be worth reading.
Check that the heater plugs are getting a 12 volt supply when the light is
on (and they will continue to be supplied for a time after). If not then the
    control relay is faulty.

The injectors might need cleaning. Try some diesel injector cleaning
additive in the fuel, and take it for a good run. When it is warmed up, push
it hard in a lower gear to get all the crud out of the system.

The only other possibility is that the compression is down, perhaps due to
incorrect valve clearances. You can check this roughly by jacking up one
front wheel, put it in 5th gear and turn the wheel. You will get one
compression stroke per half turn, and even with a cold engine, you should
find it quite hard to turn over compression. With a hot engine it should be
very hard. Also all four cylenders should feel about the same.

I take it the car starts fine when hot?

Thanks again to Brian, found out the six month old injectors had died
strange, maybe they were cheap ones.New glowplus now working fine.
    Thanks again for your help.
