Noisy tappets on a petrol 1.6 xs its a 306, year is 1998, with 60k on the clock

  1. My 306 is making a lot of noise from its tappets, i have shown it to a few
garages, and they told me its the tappets which need adjusting, so i got them
adjusted to the correct setting, the garage had around three attempts and he
just couldnt get rid of the noise, which only made the noise a billion times
worse, (sounded like a fiesta) so i got it put back to what it was.

Has any 1 every expirenced this problem on a petrol 1.6 306, i have booked it
in with peugout to see what they reckon, and the car has done 60k if thats
    any help
I also had the headgasket replaced to rectify an oil leak, along with a new
timing belt, not certain if any of these may have caused it, but the noise has
only started after all this was done.

Could it be any thing to do with the timing belt maybe, or causing incorrect
timing?, as i am lost for words now???
    Any help appreciated,
    thanks

  2. If it only started after the head was removed and replaced, one explanation
might (actually, not might - it's the obvious one) be that the valve timing
is out by a tooth and the valves are just touching the pistons. Those with
a better knowledge of this particular engine than I will tell you if this is
    possible or not.

    Hi,
    with
Not really knowing TU's I'd say it's possible, and even likely if they tried
to set valve clearance with no joy.
Quite easy to check, put the engine in position (one pin into the flywheel,
one 8mm bolt trought the camshaft pulley - brings the engine to the belt
change position). If you can't achieve this, then there's something wrong
    with timing.

  4. Thanks for the help guys, have got it booked in with Peugeot to see what they
say, is it ok to drive it around, as i dont want to be wearing anything out
in the porcess, such as the tappets, Cam, is this wear possible or can i keep
    driving it as normal??

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
TBH it's likely to come from timing to me, as you said it just came after a
hard change. And I wouldn't play with fire if I were you. Don't try to take
it for fast drives & / or wide range trips once sorted, IMO.
