Take the car to a dealer as soon as possible and get them to plug their
diagnostics into it, which will produce a readout of the part at fault. I
have had a tremendous amount of trouble with my 306 HDi and the
engine-management lamp coming on, same problem as yourself, generally no
    performance problems.

Umm sorry but I ASKED once for the readout cos they had my car about 5
times for the same darn thing. They said that it doesnt tell them
exactly what the problem is, moreover it tells them a fault code which
gives an indication of what the problem is. Oh, and if your car is
under 5 years old then it will probably cost you about £50.

    I
You dont always get performance problems but after a period of time
you get one large sod off problem as a result. Talking from
    experience here!

Im not saying dont take it to a pug dealer, but be aware that its not
cheap and that they wont always be able to trace the fault first time
which means more than one trip and a hole in your wallet!
