    Quick question. I'm buying a 2001 406 2.0 HDi 90 Rapier Estate. For
the warranty I need to know if the engine is turbocharged. Anybody
able to give a definitive answer?

No it's not, you want the 110, far better performance.

  3. yes it is.... it lack's an intercooler, and afiak the turbocharger is
    smaller

the 90HP HDi has less turbo lag and therefore reacts quicker on the
throttle. topspeed however is lower ( 110MpH or so)

youmight want to consider a remapping of the ECU which gives the 90Bhp
    a mere 110 and the 110 a mere 140Bhp

    Yes it has a turbo.
No it does not have a aftercooler or intercooler.

Not really sure what you are talking about, my 110 certainly
reacts quicker on the throttle than my old 90 ever did, in
fact the 110 performance is far superior to the 90. Even a
remapped 90 will not match a 110 for performance.

  6. Turbo lag, is the time constant between putting your foot down and the
time the turbo kicks in. the bigger the turbo, the larger the lag.
since the 90 Bhp uses a smaller turbo the lag is shorter, however if
the 110 turbo kicks in the violence is far more noticable

remapping a 90bhp will make it a very drivable car, only slighty
slower on the startgrid than a 110Bhp because it still lack's the
    intercooler.

remapping a 110 version will reduce not reduce the turbo lag, but you
can chose to spin up the turbo at an earlier stage thus making it less
    noticable.
PSA also found this to be the case and made a 136Bhp version which
mainly differs from the 110 in the mapping of the ECU

Now how about your non turbo 90 Bhp version?

  7. If the you are in the UK, you may be interested to know that the 110bhp 406
attracts a lower rate of road tax than the 90. You can check this out on
    the DVLA web site.

It also gives slightly better fuel economy, which is why the above is true.

Thanks for all your replies, this seems like a really friendly and
    useful newgroup.
So I will make sure the warranty covers the turbocharger, even if it is
    only a little one.
I'm not really bothered whether the performance is better with 110,
this is intended as a family wagon for hauling camping gear and such
    like.

I'm not really bothered whether the performance is better with 110,
If you do want a bit more power- like 20+bhp, have a look at EastCoast
Racing website. A box of tricks that takes five minutes to fit. I've used
one for a couple of years and still getting 45mpg solo and 30 towing a
caravan. Downside is the cost; £370, and the insurance went up £56.

So its nothing to do with the higher pressure injection or the 16 valves
then? I must learn more about engines!

I've got one on my C5 110. Great piece of kit. Worth every penny.
