Couple of 406 questions

Discussion in 'Peugeot 406' started by David McCallum, Sep 4, 2003.

  1. Hi All

    Just got a 406 1.9 turbo diesel

    1. The dashboard displays (mileometer, radio) is very dim, adjusting the
little wheel thingy under the dash has very little effect. Is there anything
    elase I should look for

    2. The is a hidden keypad under the dash (anti-start I think), but I can
find no reference to it in the owners manual. How do I operate it?

    3. I currently have a Sony MP3 player, what's the best way to fit it?

    4. Does this car have the trip computer (I can't see the display see 1
above). The button mentioned in the manual on the wiper control doesn't seem
    to move

    TIA

answer 1 - there are two bottons on the glass part of the speedo, one puts
the dash lights up and down the other resets the trip, keep it pressed it
    cycles through the options.

answer 4. the button on the top right stalk operates the display for the
centre dash above the radio trip computer/miles to go/current mpg/overall
    mpg/current speed and distance travelled.

dont know about 2 or 3.

I only have one button there, any other clues?
The button appears to be stuck, is this a common fault?

I have a 1998 GLX, it looks like I have the button, but I don't have the
computer and hence can't press the button. At about 1998, only the executive
had the computer (and later on the GTX's too)

You're correct, it's the engine immobiliser keypad. It uses a 4 digit code
and (according to my handbook) works in one of two ways:

    1. You can set it so you need to put in your 4 digit code everytime you
    start the engine.

    2. You can also set it so that the immobiliser automatically dis-arms when
you open the car with the remote. You will have 30 secs to start the engine,
after which you'll need to put your code in to start it up.

By the sound of it, yours is set on the latter. They are also prone to
malfunction from time to time... Peugeot replaced them with a transponder
    type immobiliser eventually.
