Cannot adjust Idle speed - little lever on fuel pump stuck

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by 405 TD Estate, Jun 23, 2006.

  1. Hi,

My idle speed was too low (500rpm) so I wanted to increase it - in the
past I think I had been adjusting the wrong thing and moving the
    throttle lever stop bolt.

I re-looked at the Haynes Manual which points to 2 bolts which act as
stops for a rocker arm. One bolt for cold (high speed) idle the other
    for warm idle.

The problem is the arm refuses to move (I believe the wax activated
cable should be able to pull it to activate cold idle). When i try and
screw the bolt in to increase the idle speed I can't move it.

Also I tried forcing it over (not too hard) with a screw driver but it
    was solid.

Any ideas? I'd like to fix it since my power steering doesn't work at
the low revs and is a right pain!

Leave it mine idles at 500rpm and i have had no problems with it.seem
to not have any problem with my power steering when engine is idle at
    500rpm.

Does it idle faster when cold? If so then at least the wax fast idle unit is
    working.

It would also help if you said which pump you have, Bosch or CAV/Rotodiesel.

  5. It's the Bosch.

No the wax thing doesn't work at all - for the hot/cold bit to work it
would need to move this lever via a cable and the lever is stuck solid.
Infact when I tried to adjust the wax cable tension the cable started
pulling through the nipple because the lever was stuck.

I'd like to change it 'cos my power steering doesn't work so I have to
blip the throttle for it to steer when parking.

Right, I have just looked up the details in my Haynes manual.
The lever you found is not moving has two adjustment screws working on it,
both pointing vertically down, at the back of the pump, either side of the
lever. The one nearest the timing belt is the fast idle adjustment, the one
further away is the main idle speed. If both of these have been screwed
right down, they will lock the lever, not allowing it to move at all. Try
unscrewing the fast idle one a few turns and see if the fast idle then
works, and if the lever will then move. Then you can try to increase the
basic idle speed with the other screw.

  7. Yes that's the right part

Sadly there is loads of room from the lever to the hot idle adjuster -
it is nearly all the way out. It is the lever itself that seems
    stuck............
