camshaft pulley warning

    Hi there

    Thought I'd share my experience:

rattle developed in the engine bay 'somewhere'. Sounded like the
exhaust manifold was hitting something. Had a quick look and power
steering pump was vibrating, although the rattle sounded like it was
    coming from the camshaft.

Took it to the garage : diagnosis - camshaft pulley failure. This is
the one that feeds the auxiliary stuff - such as power steering,
alternator etc. Apparently it's not the end of the world if the belt
breaks but not pleasant either (mine was ok thankfully).

Anyway, my local specialist sourced a part for £90 + vat instead of
Peugeots asking price of £160 plus vat and changed the timing belt
while he was in there. Total cost £250.

I've only done 40,000 miles and apparently taxi drivers are calling
for these a lot (Peugeot even admitted they were shipping plenty) - it
appears there may be something wrong with the design.

Anyway, the engine is a LOT quieter - even quieter than when I bought
it over a year ago, so this leads me to believe it was going for ages.

Just thought I'd let you know....

Completely independenly, I went to a local Alfa garage at the weekend
and am subsequently test driving a 2.5 V6 on Friday! Talk about change
    of tack!
