406 V6 Auto

  1. I've had this beast since new 1998, but since August this year, first thing
starting cold it coughs and spluts and even farts. The car has 67k on the
clock and I have just had the timing belt changed. I've tried fuel
treatments, which temporarily rectify the problem, however after running for
20 minutes or so the problem clears. Next Thursday it's having a replacement
fuel filter. Is it a fuel problem and has anyone had similar problems?

I had a problem on a 3.0ltr coupe which was an intermittent attempted
or actual stall when running up from a cold start until hot.

The fault got progressively worse until it would mess around (revs
dropping to near or actual stall several times in about the first
15\20 minutes from cold). The problem was first evident at about 55K
    miles.

The problem was seen and diagnosed to be a faulty temperature sensor.
The sensor is not very expensive but the garage diagnostics and
relacement pushed the cost up to around £160.

Your description of your car's behaviour sounds more like the rough
running I experienced of supermarket petrol (95 octane). I also found
that after a service it was OK whilst the fuel additive put in with
the service went through, but returned soon after. I only use the best
fuel available and the extra economy and smooth running more than
    compensates for the extra cost.

  5. In reply to your further questions:_

The problem was there before the belt change. I live in the NW and prior to
the problem, you may recall, Tesco had some bad fuel. I had used their brand
and I suspect this could be a factor. The garage mechanic has sujested this
is a contributory factor and strongly recommends not use supermarket fuel
    anyway.

The belt was changed precautionary measure as change is advised at 72k.

The plugs were changed last week and the problem is still there

Noone the sensor is playing up, could this be the answer. I shall discuss
this with the mechanic. Where is the sensor located?

I am sorry to say that I have no idea. The fault on my car could not
be replicated after it had reached running temperature and had to cool
off completely before a repeat perfomance which in the late
Spring\early Summer time mean't almost all day. I booked it in the
garage and they set it up, overnight for diagnostics in the morning.

It was only after the new sensor was fitted that I realised that the
faulty one had been having an effect all through the rev range. Not
too much of an effect but it definitely has run much better since.

When I posted, just after the fault was found\cleared back in June, a
couple of people added to the thread stating that they had resolved
the same problem. One had got a sensor from a scrappy for almost
nothing and the other had bought a new one and self fitted. I hope
they see this thread and let you know the sensor's location.

I looked at the invoice and it is described as a "temperature probe"
and cost £17.09 before VAT. Failing any thread replies I would ring a
spares dept of a Peugeot main dealer and ask for the price + supply
delay of a temperature probe for your model. If you get the right
price (nearly, mine was late May 2003), ask him where it fits as he
will probably be looking at a exploded view schematic diagram.
