My 406 1.9td recently smells terrible , any ideas , I think it might be the
air-con. Cleaned the washer bottle out because that was dirty but the
    unpleasent smell is still there.

    Thanks in advance...

Have you checked for dead road kills underneath or around the exhaust as
    that really smells !!

It's the aircon, bit of a musty smell? There's a post on here somewhere
about something you can buy from Halfords for £11 that dries the aircon out.

    Our first Peugeot - about 30 years ago - a 504 - we spilt a small
amount of milk on the passenger side floor. I stunk for six months or
so despite everything we tried. We have had about five cars since then
and the whole family is singularly careful to avoid spills.

I drive a 406 1.8 ST and have a similar smell problem. It reeks a bit like
vinigar. This smell however comes and goes..... I have changed the pollen
filter ($10) but it didn't help a whole lot. I doubt if its indeed the
airco, because when I turn that on, the smell seems to dissapear.

There are 2 possible reasons for the smell.

One there may be a leakage in the car, check that footwells and floor
    coverings are dry.

I had this same issue with a BMW, the issue arises from bacteria in the
    A/C unit.

The bacteria form and smell when warm, when the A/C is turned on it stops
    the bacteria smelling.

There is a spray available, spray it into the air intake for the A/C with
    the pollen filter removed.

BMW actually did this for me and resolved the smell.

    Hope this info helps.

The issue is due to bacteria building up in the air system.

There is a specific spray to kill the bacteria.

Remove the Pollen filter and spray into the air INLET.

The smell disappears when the A/C is on due to the coldness stopping the
    bacteria from spawning.

Also check that your floor wells and carpets are all dry and there is no
leakage, you may have to place your hand underneath the carpet.

This will also cause a smell.

    Hope all helps.
