406 corroded exhaust strap

  1. I own a 1999 406, 2 litre petrol, automatic Executive model.

The strap that is wound around the rear silencer box has corroded away on
one side leaving the exhaust pipe in danger of falling onto the road. I have
obtained some copper earthing wire and wrapped it around the box and
attached it to the hooks that go into the rubber mounts so at least it
    should prevent that from happening..

The strap is spot welded to the rear box so although the box is perfectly
gas tight, I would need to get a new assembly for a fitted cost of £191 at
my friendly Peugeot dealer! The cheap exhaust fitters in the area can't
supply this box as it is less than five years old and their suppliers don't
    make them yet.
Needless to say I have looked for another solution and a village garage are
prepared to fabricate a strap and fit it at a cost of about £45, a couple of
    hours work.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a reasonably cheap solution?

  2. I'd be friendly charging that price! Go to an independent exhaust garage
should do a back box for about half that. It'll take ten minutes to fix.

  3. Agreed, that's the first thing I tried, but that box isn't being made by
suppliers other than Peugeot at this moment in time. Two independent exhaust
garages checked their catalogues and found it was still being designed! That
applied to most 1999 and later Peugeot 406's btw.

  4. You do surprise me. A year ago my back box fell off and I had my local
    garage replace it! It's a V6 406 btw.included the chrome end.

  5. Was that a Peugeot box or one made for the exhaust fitters market?

Anyway the local village garage have welded a couple of "hooks" to the rear
box at a cost of £44 so hopefully that will last until the box corrodes
through. They also said their catalogue of alternative exhaust suppliers
    didn't have 1999 boxes.
