405 Immobiliser prob

My immobiliser doesn't like to work. I've tried both my plip keys. The lights on the plips come on fine, but it's really hit and miss with anything happening. I have to aim from different points outside the car. I did wonder if I can remove the immobiliser and retro fit an alternative.

1) Afaik your plip keys open the doors and turn off the alarm only and have no bearing on the immobiliser. This is certainly the case on my 1995 405
2)you may have tried both keys but have you tried new batteries ( dont buy from PUG- too dear)?
3) if you are still having problems, take off the cover in the roof headlining and make sure the inside of the infra red sensor cover is clean. This can sometimes fill up with water due to a leak round the roof aerial.

Just slightly off topic - when I got my 405 it had the infrared thingy on the ceiling but no remotes - do you know if I can get new ones? Or is this one of those impossible missions???

I'm sure pug will supply them but IIRC people in this NG has written of prices around £60 each!!!!!!

The codes are hardwired in each key and car and these have to set to match. I don't know whether the dealers do the coding or the correct key code has to be ordered to match the car.

Yes you can. You need the number printed on a small tag in the roof receiver. 4 screws hold the cosole to the roof. 2 behind the courtesy light, one behind the map light and one behind the blank plug next to the sunroof switch. Then unclip the receiver and look inside for the tag. If you can't see one, then you can buy a kit which has the receiver and 2 plips, but that is very expensive.

I am pretty certain mine was the high side of 60. The price comes in many parts: key, code, programming, VAT. If getting a quote from a dealer make sure that you get an all inclusive price.
