1994 2.0 GTX estate. The gearbox suddenly has given up making changes
automatically. I can use the lever to make manual changes and progress
    is fine.

Could this be a simple matter of getting the transmission oil changed
(together with a filter, maybe - wherever that is located)? Or could
this be indicative of other problems?

    Anyone know the answer?

Obviously I will take it to a garage, but I really have little faith
    in them being honest.

Is it leaking Oil ? Could be a seal needing replacement, or worse!
Has it gone into "limp home mode"? This could be serious.
If the internal filter has become detached it could break up internally
    causing serious damage.
Mine did all the above and cost £1000.00 for V6 auto box fitted by an auto
engineers specialising in Auto transmissions NOT A PUG DEALER. Sorry to bear
my soul but "auto" gear boxes are a black art, mind you nowadays
computerised engines now fit into that category.
