I have an annoying problem. when my auto 306 is cold it suddenly jumps into
diff lock and sport mode..the lights on the dash come on. I stop the car and
turn the ign off and on and the problem goes. when the car is warm there is
    no probs.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Mick,

I have an almost identical problem with a 406.
Happened a couple of times on Sunday and was fine when restarted. I've had
it in to Peugeot cos it was going in for service anyway and, surprise
surprise, they can find nothing wrong. But, they can find nothing right!
No communication from the engine ECU to the gearbox ECU. And such is the
quality of peugeot techies that if the laptop doesn't give them the
answer, they're stumped. Basically the gearbox and ecu are functioning
fine but may not forever. I have the part number from peaugeot for a
replacement gearbox ECU (£650 +vat) and they want me to order it to see if
that's the problem. OK then... They did say that pettern ECUs exist, but I
can't find them. Does anybody know where I could get a recon ECU for a
gearbox? Please keep me updated on your problem, as we speak my car is
    running fine.

Your best bet is a breaker's yard or send your ECU to an independent
specialist to see if it is faulty. Personally I doubt the ECU is at
fault. It seems too often engineers blame everything on a faulty ECU.

Garages don't like spending much time trying to figure out faults like
this because they know they can only charge so much. They make far more
just doing bread and butter stamped servicing.
