I have a problem on a 205CJ, the 'STOP' light comes on intermittently but I have had the garage check the oil, water temp, cooling fan and they are sure everything is ok well, normal. Nevertheless, it is disturbing to see this psychic while traveling across the country. When this happens, the car does not overheat and appears to operate normally. Could this be an electrical fault? Can anyone advise?

With an old car like yours its probably a bad wire or a poor connection.
Check the oil pressure switch connection, could even be a bad switch? cheep and easy to replace.. Also the coolant water level sensor gets all gummed up and dirty, remove and clean it out, its part of the plastic filler cap with a multi plug. Depending on what engine you have, its found in the radiator header tank, or in the radiator its self.

Thank you for taking the time to advise me, I will follow this up. Can I also ask you another question? When I start the car from cold it runs perfectly. If I then stop and switch off the engine for say 30 minutes, when I start it again the diagnostic warning light comes, the engine stalls and runs roughly for a few minutes then goes back to normal. If during this time I have my foot lightly on the accelerator then when the engine is in ‘overrun’ I can feel the accelerator pulled down slightly and the diagnostic light comes on. My local garage ran out of ideas and suggested Wynn’s injector cleaner which had little effect. Any suggestions?

Is it multi or mono injection? That is four injectors or one large injector unit.

The monos did have problems. What you need is to find an old school Peugeot specialist who still has the old Peugeot diagnostic tool. Otherwise it can be a bit hit and miss.
It’s a very long time since I worked on one of these. I can remember the idle control motor ( some call it a stepper motor ) can play up. https://www.xdalys.lt/en/product/13355244929/ If you can find one? replace it, and clean out the housing with intake cleaner. While you’re at it give the intake a good clean as well. Also all the multi plugs on the mono unit.
It’s old and things get gummed up.

I am now back in the UK (although the car is still in France)and I hope you don’t mind me coming back to you on this. I found a Peugeot specialist who made a couple of suggestions related to the diagnostic warning light. The first was to check whether when the problem occurs the battery is still charging and to use a multi meter to do this. The second was to replace the ignition module which I think is alongside the distributor. Do you have any comments on these suggestions?
    Thank you, Michael

Without more information from the Peugeot specialist its difficult to comment.
If he has had experience with these old TU mono`s I would leave it to him. Just mention to him about my previous idea`s in my post regarding the oil switch and coolant level sensor.
